New trial to stamp out bad-mouthing of referees
A trial set to be rolled out across grassroots soccer could see players being sent to the sin bin if they disrespect the referee.
The trial will begin this year across senior and junior soccer clubs and is designed to stamp out bad behaviour.
Under new laws, a player could receive a yellow card for disrespecting an official which would see them sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes.
The yellow card then remains against the player’s name and if they’re given a second yellow card, they’re sent off for the rest of the match.
Kris Griffith-Jones, referees boss with Football NSW, tells Ben Fordham he’s pleased with the changes.
“We’ve had great support from our football associations.
“It’s a fine line for a referee to manage the game and make it an enjoyable experience but in the same way, they want to be enjoying it themselves.
“I think it’ll help. I think it’s a good thing.”
