Is this love? Tips to avoid romance scams
What’s love… a sweet old-fashioned notion? It’s also a huge scamming business
that’s costing lovestruck Aussies more than $40 million a year.
Mike is joined by Ches Rafferty, Cybersecurity Expert & CEO / Founder of Scantek who reveals that romance scams account for 33% of all reported scams.
So how do you protect yourself and your bank account from that Nigerian Prince?
Mr Rafferty said it’s simple, trust your instincts, never share your personal details, or give access to your financial information to anyone you haven’t verified.
“Around Valentine’s Day romance scams always escalate,” he says. “Cyber crims
are praying on people’s loneliness and it’s the lowest of low. They’re taking advantage of people’s emotions.”
Mr Rafferty says to avoid being scammed this Love Day, make sure you never click on suspicious links and be alert to red flags such as someone you’ve never met asking for money for an emotional reason.
