Dungeons & Dragons turns 50
Mike is joined by Professor Lisa Given, RMIT University Director of the Social Change Enabling Impact Platform, Professor of Information Sciences, and an interdisciplinary researcher in human information behaviour about Dungeons and Dragons, the iconic tabletop role-playing game, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Maintaining its popularity and cultural significance & valued at over US$15 billion in 2022, the game’s success is attributed to the appeal of its fifth edition, the growth in online gaming culture, and increased societal acceptance of once considered “nerdy” interests.
Despite controversies and toxic fandom, the majority of players engage in D&D for fun, creativity, and social connection. In challenging times, the game serves as a source of affordable entertainment, escapism, and a means to stay connected.
A recent Australian study suggests that playing D&D has mental health benefits, including decreased depression, stress, and anxiety, and increased self-esteem, making it a potential tool for well-being interventions and mental health prevention.
