Fiat 500e La Prima electric hatch – great city car, shame about the price.
It’s not often we talk about Fiat these days – the diminutive Fiat 500 the Italian
makers only car here. I’m driving the relatively new Fiat 500e La Prima – the
electric version of the pint-sized Fiat hatch which has had enormous European
success. Here, its acceptance has been dampened with a price tag of $52,500 –
around $58,000 drive-away. Enough to limit sales of this electric city car to a
dedicated few. The petrol Fiat 500 hatch one of my favourites so the electric
version held much interest – 61mm longer and 56mm wider and sitting on a
24mm longer wheelbase. The upfront electric motor produces 87kW of power,
220Nm of torque – with a 42kWh lithium-ion battery all up weight a rather heavy
1300kilos. Range claimed at 311km on a full charge. Inside, gear selection is by
push button while regular door handles are also replaced by a circular button.
The Fiat 500e comes in one no-cost colour white, most colours a $700 option. Fit
and finish was excellent, so too features – 17-inch alloy wheels, a fixed glass
panoramic roof, wireless phone charging and a nice suite of active safety
features. No spare wheel though just a tyre repair kit. Drive details next segment.
